We've had seriously serious global warming here, coming in near horizontal at times, dumping about four inches in just a few hours after tea time yesterday (pictured above), keeping on into the wee small hours of this morning to about a foot overall. We haven't had it this bad since 1963.

This made a perfect backdrop to Tony Juniper whingeing in the loss-making Grauiniad, offering a FUD-laden prediction that David Cameron's EU speech is "grave news for our environment".

Juniper thus paints a picture of hard-hearted (and presumably money-grubbing) Tory MPs, frustrated at their failure to cut what some ministers see as unnecessary environmental legislation through their red tape challenge (because many of the laws in question originate from Brussels).

The validity of environmental regulations is questionable in light of this:

Takeaway? The Environmental Protection Agency of West Pondia says Chinese air pollution levels should cause death rates to be over 100 times greater than they are.

There is of course the wider point here, something we are missing too, a point which needs making in a quietly determined manner.

FoE, Juniper - and writing in that execrable rag, what else would you expect form a biased mouthpiece like him?

But setting aside the water palaver - Juniper argues poorly and which is total rubbish, the idea that somehow; that the EU is all seeing, all beneficent and saviour and SOLE protector of the environment is a puny and easily dismissed argument.

I could point out EU policy on biofuel crops - which boosts artificially commodity wheat prices which is causing indigent people in the third world to starve.
Thanks to CAP, Mono-agriculture, which incidentally is appalling for the soils - agri business buying up arable land and cutting hedgerows and turning the patchwork farmland [avian and wildlife disaster] of the English countryside into a version of the great plains and of course the mass usage of agri-chemicals which poison the water table and rivers.
Then of course due to other EU policy diktats across the nation, bird mincers, solar panel arrays covering the countryside - how can these useless boondoggles be good for the environment [or anything?] and local winged fauna?

But setting aside all that and [many] other arguments which are counter to Junipers pathetic article.

You get the idea from his and the blitz of pro EU propaganda and flowery encomiums in praise of our miraculous and God given bounty: all because we're in the EU..................

And that somehow before the EU - we were a nation just discovering the wheel - I mean, just think - how did we manage all on our own?

Well I declare?!

..........some would say - much better actually.

And finally: Didn't we have potable water in those days [pre year zero 1973 1st Jan] - were we not the first western nation to build a network of reservoirs and pipe clean water into our towns and cities.........it was our idea in the first place - was it not.

I know it's childish but every time I hear this man's name I start to mentally sing Donovan's song : Jennifer Juniper. So, I can't take anything he says seriously because he's sitting very still, on a hill.
