I have to suggest that, rather than remain on the defensive, we demand from these half wits (millipedes, CBI and good old Virgin Richard), what exactly they see as a UK future in the EU. The Millipedes in particular seem to be of the view that 'more of the same' is the key.
It could be argued that 'more of the same' is what has landed us in this mess in the first place. I would argue that the increasing resentment toward the EU to be found in these Islands is, in no small measure, a product of successive governments (Whitehall) following the Millipede line. Simply, we will jump in with both feet holding the hair of the nation and ensure that we never allow any kind of 'popular vote'. Net result is that the EU isn't my 'project'. Exit for me just isn't the big issue it would be for 'Sir Humphrey'.
What I can't understand is what they think will happen, having deprived the UK population of 'a vote' for yet another decade, when the 'issue' resurfaces in 2030? If they are worried about loosing a vote now - what exactly do they think will happen, having 'silenced the issue' (and the population) for now, in a decade or two?
I might suggest that, the way things are being handled right now, there will be a straight in/out vote twenty years hence and 'out' will win by a massive margin with no effort from the 'out' team. Mostly because these dickheads, far from not understanding the problem, choose, yet again, to bulldoze it over for another short term gain.
One can imagine a situation where a future Millipede government dumps us into the EZ and full Federalisation. No 'referendum' and are then 'shocked at the response of the 'little Englanders' (Molotov cocktails, heads on spikes). They really don't understand the issue.
All they are managing to do by delaying a decision and stifling debate is creating a situation, down the line, where 'reason' doesn't enter into 'the debate'. We will want out and we will be out.
I don't really see how the EU are going to get away with replacing our current PM (shit as he is) with an 'EU authorised' PM as per Italy. You can bet that they will try if he ever offers any kind of 'democracy'. Hence his grand EU speech getting sidelined by a phone call from party HQ - all we need to know really. The best he could manage was to 'leak' some shit he might have said were he allowed to say it.
We have a silent PM living fear of replacement by Moscow. These are the methods of the (E)USSR, our real Junta knows that given a popular vote in the UK they will loose - therefore a vote in the UK is never going to happen - neither is that speech by a 'rebellious' PM.
Then again, replace our PM by a puppet or not, we have always had the advantage that sending tanks into our major cities has always required a little more thought than sending them into rebellious Prague. Ask anyone who has tried. England has always been a problem for those who would 'Federalise' Europe - long may we remain so.
