Over the past few days, we have seen a small but important illustration of what it might be like when (or if) an EU referendum is declared. In particular, we have seen the Financial Times throwing its hat into the ring, launching a succession of scares all aimed at dissuading us from considering a rapid departure from "Mother Europe".

That much is very similar to what we were seeing in 1975, when the media piled in behind the Government to support Britain's continued membership of the (then) Common Market.

Forty-plus years later (when we expect to have our next referendum), things will not be quite the same, as we now have the experience of the "benefits" of membership, one of which has been unrestricted immigration from accession countries.

Thus, even the europhile Economist is not able to maintain a wholly optimistic front, currently reporting concerns over the Balkans and the abuse of the asylum system.

The fact that most immigration is from outside the EU has been avoided by the media and political class so I think they will be reluctant to bring it up in the inevitable debate on immigration during any Referendum campaign.
The possibility of abrogating the convention is not as farfetched as some people may think. One aspect that is getting more publicity is our inability to deport foreign criminals even when they have committed serious crimes such as murder and rape.
I recall a story in the week of an African rapist who after being released went on to rape a very young child. He had a family in the UK so could not be deported after his first conviction.

Judges have “interpreted” the convention in ways that the original signatories would not have dreamed of and the electorate are not as docile as they once were.

Ah, but "Diversity" is your "strength"! And the Media and your Betters will drive that home every opportunity they get. And tag those who disagree as RASICTS!!!

They have their script, and they read it well. They have their end-state in clear view, and are prepared to do ANYTHING to assure that nothing delays the drive to same.

They may have their script but fewer and fewer people are listening.
