To celebrate "the entry of the United Kingdom into the European Community" on 1 January 1973, the lawyer Lord Goodman, a former chairman of the Arts Council, was invited by his friend Mr Heath to organise a series of nation-wide events under the title "Fanfare for Europe".

At a gala evening at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, prosperous bankers were regaled with operatic hits and guffawed at snippets about foreigners read by actors, while a special arrangement of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" modulated into a piece of pseudo-jazz by Michael Tippet.

In a darkened room, the Victoria and Albert Museum put on show a tastefully lit selection of art-objects from each member state, such as a pair of Bronze Age wind instruments from a Danish bog. A concert was given in York Minster by the Great Universal Stores Footwear band. The Whitechapel Art Gallery staged an exhibition of sweet-wrappers. Gas and electricity showrooms across the country featured demonstrations of continental cookery.

Thanks for all your good work you have done Dr. North.

I wish you and yours a happy New Year.

What a difference a week in politics makes. From being locked into evil EU they are doing their level best to show us the door. There is light at the end of the tunnel and the 40 year nightmare may be coming to an end.

But the year we actually leave will be even happier.

For all your hard work Dr. N, thank you, assuredly do I appreciate it because God knows I know that I irk you sometimes, for which - may I tender my profuse and sincerest apologies.

Happy new year to all.

Indeed, Dr. N!!
However, here's wishing the best of New Years yet: to you, Mrs. EU, and yours.
Best wishes also to all who support this most excellent blog (and the Harrogate Agenda).

Happy New Year to you & your family, Richard, and the same to all members of this blog. Let's hope that this year we really can build on the progress being made to get ourselves out of the clutches of the EvilUnion.

A very happy new year to you and your family too, Richard.
I really appreciate the work that you all do in exposing the real story behind so much nonsense that is produced by the regular media. I never fail to mention your site to my friends as an "authoritative source". With respect to "things EU": 40 years is far too long. Time to call and end to the madness! All the best, John

With a bit of luck (and a lot of hard work), we will never see 50 years of membership. For the first time since we joined, our withdrawal looks to be a realistic prospect. And that, if nothing else, makes it a Happy New Year.

I'll drink to that

Happy New Year to you Richard and Mrs EURef and to everyone who reads your blog. Keep up the good work

I will add my wishing you and your family a happy new year. I would also like to extend that to the likes of Booker who has been one of the few mainstream journalist to continually bang the drum against the oppressive EU. He has started the New Year well with a piece in the DM.

Great work, Richard.....I've no doubt that the effort you & Booker have made & continue to make has played no small part in changing attitudes to EU membership. Admirable tenacity & persistence, not to mention love of country, is bearing fruit on some still stony terrain.
So, the best of New Years to you and your family...& I include Booker. Wishing you, above all, continued good health & a further honing of the snarl modeBigGrin

I agree with all these posts and will continue to visit this site regularly during most days because the work produced by North and Booker is IMO one of the main driving forces of the Eurowithdrawalist movement.

The same day the DM publishes an article from Booker regarding the EU they also have their own comment about the EU. Proves the DM is still pro-EU and I wonder if they know what Cameron is going to talk about when they produce such drivel as this

For many, however, their first experience of "belonging" to the Common Market came with the arrival of VAT, possibly the most bureaucratic tax system ever devised.

A club that demands the levy of a new tax as a condition of membership. That's a bit of a warning sign, isn't it?

My MP, who is constantly tipped as a future leader of the Labour Party and possible future Chancellor, recently told a Labour meeting that she wants a reduction in VAT rate to stimulate the economy. Yet the long term goal of the EU is to harmonise VAT so eventually the British chancellor will have no discretion on what items to charge VAT and at what rate. By the time my MP gets to make the decision, it will no longer be hers to make. Does she even realise this?

I can't help but agree that our politicians have no real idea of the real nature of what they've signed up to.
