Courtesy of Autonomous Mind and Boiling Frog, we pick up the latest blunder from the Failygraph, in describing Herman Van Rompuy as "president of the Council of Europe". Nor is this the unguarded extrusion of some random commentator, but the "Telegraph view" – the corporate view of a newspaper which AM describes as the Barclay Brother Beano. Certainly, any newspaper which makes such a fundamental blunder cannot be taken as a serious player on matters to do with the EU. But then, for a media at large which insists on calling the European Councils "summits", it is unsurprising that such mistakes are made. The waning credibility of the legacy media also help explain why circulation is in terminal decline. The last figures for the Failygraph (October), bottomed out at 560,471 copies daily, a 7.19 percent drop year-on-year. In July, the average was 576,790 copies. View full article here

It is true when they try to report on other subjects too. Yesterday the MoS/DM had 3 articles that mentioned 20,000 police officers have "2nd jobs". It wasn't until you actually read the article that one officer's supposed "2nd job" was to become a vicar AFTER retiring from the police and another was a police staff worker (not an officer) who taught pole dancing in her spare time. Of these 20,000, the biggest single "2nd" job was buying and letting property. So given they cannot even get facts correct in silly articles like that, how do you suppose they have any chance with the complications of the EU?

What amazes me is that they still manage to keep the circulation they have. But all of them are on borrowed time!

I don't know ... figuring out that many of our so called 'journalists' are half wits doesn't seem to add much to the debate. Anyhoo .. For me the real issue in that cut was the first couple of sentences. Cameron, or his successor, will only have three real options... (a) In with both feet. (b) Hang around getting invited to the party as a formality (but we drink alone in the corner and get told to shut up) (c) Out via Article 50 - let the EZ go its own way and we negotiate a new 'relationship' (a) There is no way that 'in with both feet' will pass in this country. Not now, not ever. (b) 'Can kicking' - with the hope that the future will bring a new 'landscape'. Even the dumbest citizen will realise, after a year or two, that drinking alone in the corner was always a temporary solution. We are left with (c) If anyone wishes to correct me then (quote and correct (my wrong thinking)) .... Edited by user 31 December 2012 19:31:03(UTC)
| Reason: added "(my wrong thinking)" to the last line
