EU Referendum: ahead of the game

"With senior Tory MPs such as Owen Paterson and Dominic Grieve warning that it would be unacceptable for taxpayers' money to be used to support the government's preferred outcome of the referendum, Nigel Farage's thoughts on the matter seem somewhat a sideshow", writes the Telegraph.

The point that Mr Farage might take from this is that, unless you are yourself inherently newsworthy (which often tends to mean publicity for the wrong reasons), in order to get the headlines you have to have something novel and interesting to say.

Thus, when the media runs out of the usual stuff and comes looking for fresh material, the people who are going to make the running on the are those who are able to bring new issues to the table. Perhaps, if Mr Farage has any ambitions of being a high-profile figure in the EU referendum campaign, he'd better start reading the blog.

Of course, there was a time when I was passing him briefings directly across our shared desk, but he put a stop to all that. Now, he'll have to wait his turn, until the grown-ups have finished.
