This is a political blog, which means – in theory - we're interested in politics. And it's party conference season, which means – in theory - we're interested in the Labour Party conference, and Ed Miliband's speech.

But actually, we're not, not when even the Guardian is taking the mick, not when yesterday we were writing about being sick of politicians taking us for fools, only to have a politician do precisely that.

I don't know where Mr Miliband thinks he's going with a leader's speech that was almost apolitical in the way it managed to avoid any reference to most of the important issues of the day, but if that is his "take" on what politics should be, either I am terribly out of touch, or he is woefully ill-advised.

In the past, one supposes, a lacklustre speech by the leader of the opposition would open the way for the prime minister to shine, but I suspect that the opportunity offered by Miliband will be missed, the chance to beat one of the lowest lows in the history of party politics.

You would almost get the impression that each side is trying to lose the general election. Do they know something we don't?
